Ms. Cheap: Shopping tips for fall/winter Ladies of Charity sale

If you are looking for a new (or new to you) fall wardrobe, the Ladies of Charity seasonal sale opens soon. Not only can you find good quality fashion at great prices, but also your purchases go to help the needy in the community.”

Organizers say, “Our apparel is beautiful and our prices amazing.”

Here are 14 things to know about this upcoming sale at this longstanding nonprofit:

*Ladies of Charity fall/winter sale opens Friday, Sept. 26, and runs through Saturday, Nov. 1, with consigned and donated ladies and men’s clothing and accessories and shoes and jewelry.

*Clothing donations are accepted year-round between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at 2212 State St. They also accept “next to new” shoes and costume jewelry.

*More than 100 Ladies of Charity volunteers have been working six hours a day, six days a week since mid-August to sort, price and get donated and consigned items ready for the sale.

*There are 300 consignors for this fall/winter sale.

*The volunteers restock the racks throughout the sale.

*No sales tax is charged on shoes or clothing because Ladies of Charity is a nonprofit.

*Pricing is typically 20-30 percent of retail or 50-60 percent of retail for new with tags items.

* There are special racks for the Chico’s brand and don’t miss the “Better Brands” rack that includes Anthropology, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Tahari, JMcLaughlin, Draper James, Tory Burch and more.

*The sale location is the Ladies of Charity shop at 2216 State St., across the street from Jimmy Kelly’s Steakhouse.

* No returns – all sales are final.

*Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 26 and on Mondays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays through Nov. 1. Opening weekend usually brings in more than 300 shoppers.

*This semi-annual thrift store sale started in 1948 and raises thousands of dollars for the Emergency Assistance Program (formerly known as the Welfare program), the scholarship program, Christmas basket program and other community outreach initiatives

**Organizers say the goal is to make $100,000 from each seasonal sale for the Emergency Assistance fund.

*Ladies of Charity is a Catholic nonprofit with 400 members. Its mission is “to serve rather than be served.” The organization operates through its volunteers with only one part-time paid employee. With the exception of a few years during the pandemic, LOC has been operating for 113 years.
